Apartment Basilius is situated inside the area of the San Basilio convent.
The San Basilio convent was founded in the XI th cent. outside the walls of the town, in a district called Casamare on the Carnale. It was was for noble Amalfi women and was under the protection of the order of St. Benedict. The monastery received many inheritances both in money and properties also outside the town. It owned for example also 2 other monasteries, grounds with mills at Mazzara in Sicily. The Archbishop Giulio Rossini, with a papal decree of Pope Gregory X111th of the 25 th April 1579 transferred the nuns from 3 nunneries in the Amalfi Republic to the new Nunnery of the Holy Trinity, to give them more central accommodation.
The convent was then occupied by the Capuchin monks who stayed there till they moved in about 1600 to the Monastery of St Peter of the Canonica, today the Hotel Capuccini,( which stayed in the hands of the same family until quite recently); for many years the building was abandoned. Over the years the cells of the nuns have been transformed into small apartments. The little church of St Basilio remains as a reminder of its ancient history, and every year on the 14 th of June the saint’s day is celebrated by the local people.. In one wing there are small flats which give onto a long corridor which retains its monastic atmosphere.
Very close to the aprtment the Valley of the Mills, where you can find the Paper Museum. This area, crossed by the Canneto River, and that of the nearby Valle delle Ferriere, a charming natural environment, constitute a Natural Biogenetic Reserve. The ascent from Amalfi is tiring but fascinating. The remains of the mills that brought the water to the paper workshops are discovered, and the walk in natures that hides secret charms, is rewarded with springs and waterfalls, and glimpses of the sea between the lush mediterranean scrub.
